Sprawl in the Burgh 2 is approaching, ladies and gentlemen.

247 Fighting Championships’ cage grappling series is back Friday, Oct. 20, at the Hollywood Casino at the Meadows Event Center, and it’s loaded with not just the best talent in Western PA but some of the best talent on planet Earth.

Atop this card is a packed house of elite-level competitors, including:

Nicky Rod (Yes, Nicky Rod in Pittsburgh!) vs. the Mat Factory’s Jake Lowry and Cody Gamble and Ground Zero Bridgeport’s Zack Humbertson – special exhibition match (read more about that here)

• No. 5-ranked Bellator middleweight Dalton Rosta vs. Stout PGH black belt Tanner Hall

• Active UFC middleweight Josh Fremd vs. 5-1 ammy MMA fighter/BJJ brown belt Josh Ramirez

• Undefeated 247 FC amateur featherweight champion Lucas Seibert vs. four-time PA state champ wrestler, pro MMA fighter, and USA Grappling silver medalist Gavin Teasdale

• Pro wrestling stars Savage Gentleman vs. Garrisaon Creed

In addition, this event features some of the area’s top black belts and brown belts, as well as white – purple belt matchups on the undercard.

It’s going to be insane. That’s a promise.

But what exactly is the format? What can you expect to see when you show up or watch the live stream?

We’re here today to break down the ruleset and structure of Sprawl in the Burgh.

1. All matches are no-gi, submission only

This format promotes action and fast-paced activity, rewarding fighters for pursuing submissions rather than competing solely for points (NOT THAT THERE’S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT!).

Taking place inside the 247 FC cage, we want these grappling matchups to bring the same excitement of a full-blown MMA fight, and this no-gi, submission-only format accomplishes that. In fact, we are rewarding all finishes across all skill levels with a $100 bonus. You submit your opponent, you get $100.

If at the end of a match neither competitor secured a submission, however, the referee will declare a winner based on aggression, submission attempts, and control. If the match is too close for the referee to call outright, he/she will consult with a third-party cageside judge to determine the victor.

2. Yes, there are weight classes.

Pretty self-explanatory there, eh? We love Marcelo Garcia vs. Ricco Rodriguez as much as the next guy –– but you won’t see it in our cage… this time, at least. Weigh-ins are at noon on fight day (Friday, Oct. 20) at the Hollywood Casino at the Meadows.

3. Sprawl in the Burgh rules? Pretty standard.

We want to encourage high-level, submission-hunting jiu-jitsu inside the cage –– but that doesn’t mean anything goes.

Some restrictions:

• No strikes of any kind (we save that for our MMA shows –– P.S. Brawl in the Burgh 18 takes place the next day, Saturday, Oct. 21 at the same location…)

• No small-joint manipulation

• No spiking or slamming an opponent on their head/neck

• No “powerbomb” type slams to get out of a submission or to break closed guard

• No slamming at all for youth divisions

• No jamming fingers into an orifice or wound

• No leg/foot attacks or neck cranks in youth divisions

• No direct attacks to the trachea or windpipe (commonly referred to as the rape choke)

• Hygiene matters! Yes, competitors need to be hygienic (that means showered/clipped nails/etc.), and they need to be wearing legitimate no-gi apparel (no zippers, pockets, exposed strings, etc.)

Ready to come see some elite grappling in person?
